PARTICIPANT INFORMATION SHEET
A survey study exploring shisha use in Birmingham
STUDY BACKGROUND
You are invited to take part in a survey which is part of a study exploring shisha use in Birmingham. Before you decide whether or not you want to take part, it is important for you to understand why the study is being done and what it will involve. Please read the following information and ask the team if anything is not clear or if you would like more information.
There is very little information about shisha use in Birmingham including how, where and why people use shisha. The aim of this project is to understand the different reasons why people use shisha in Birmingham.
WHAT WILL YOU NEED TO DO?
This is an online study, and you will be asked to complete questions about your shisha use (such as how often), reasons for shisha use and background questions (age, gender, ethnicity, nationality, marital status, employment, education, religion and region).
No personal information will be collected, and your response cannot be linked back to you. The survey will take around 10 minutes to complete.
WHO CAN TAKE PART?
To take part in this study you must:
- Have used shisha in Birmingham at least once (either in the past or currently)
- Aged 12 years and above
ARE THERE ANY RISKS OF TAKING PART?
There is very little risk to taking part in this survey. However, there will be questions about potentially sensitive topics such as the harm of tobacco use. If you feel you will become upset answering questions like this or questions about shisha use, then you should not take part in this study.
ARE THERE ANY BENEFITS OF TAKING PART?
Although there are no immediate benefits for you for filling out the survey, your answers will help understand why people use shisha in Birmingham. This might help understand how to support people in future.
WHAT HAPPENS TO THE INFORMATION I PROVIDE?
No personal information will be collected which means your answers cannot be linked back to you directly. You will be asked to create a code at the beginning of the survey which only you know. If you decide to take part but later change your mind, you can share this code with the research team to have your answers taken out of the study.
The survey responses will be kept on university devices and can only be accessed by members of the research team. At the end of the study, the survey responses (which are anonymous and do not include any personal information) will be shared with the Birmingham City Council’s Public Health team who has funded this study. Survey responses will be kept for 10 years after which it will be destroyed.
The findings of the study will be shared as a report, a paper for publication, and presentations. It will not be possible to identify you at any point in this study.
WHAT IF I CHANGE MY MIND ABOUT TAKING PART?
You do not have to take part if you do not want to. If you decide to take part but change your mind, you can stop taking part at any point, without having to give a reason. You have the right to not answer any of the questions in the survey and can also stop taking part by closing the online tab or browser.
If you complete the survey but later change your mind, you can contact a member of the research team asking for your responses to be taken out. To do this, please provide the private code you created at the start of the survey. You can remove your responses at any time up to one week after taking part after which it will not be possible as all answers will be combined for analysis.
