Paid Paternity Leave – the perspectives of fathers and non-fathers

PARTICIPANT INFORMATION SHEET
Paid Paternity Leave – the perspectives of fathers and non-fathers

STUDY BACKGROUND
We are researchers from the College of Psychology at Birmingham City University. We are interested in the attitudes and perspectives of fathers, expecting fathers and non-fathers from the UK towards paid paternity leave, gender roles and caregiving responsibilities.

WHAT WILL YOU NEED TO DO?
In this study, you will be asked to answer some questions about your attitudes towards paid paternity leave, gender roles and caregiving responsibilities. There are 60 questions for non-fathers, 81 questions for fathers who have never used paid paternity leave and 93 questions for fathers who have used paid paternity leave. An example of a question entails indicating how much you agree with the statement: “the father should have the right to paid leave from work to take care of a newborn child, the same as the mother,” or “swearing and obscenity are more repulsive in the speech of a woman than a man.”

WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO TAKE PART?
You must be male, over the age of 18 and a UK resident to take part in this study. We are interested in recruiting fathers, expecting fathers and men who are considering having children in the future. Please consider whether you might find the topics of fatherhood and parenting distressing or upsetting. If so, you may not want to take part.

HOW LONG WILL THE STUDY LAST?
On average, this study takes 30-45 minutes to complete.

ARE THERE ANY RISKS OF TAKING PART?
As this study involves asking participants about their attitudes towards paid paternity leave and fatherhood, there is a risk that some questions might be offensive or upsetting to some. If considerations of this kind are likely to be upsetting or offensive to you, you should consider not taking part. You can also choose not to answer any questions you do not want to answer and can withdraw at any point during the study, simply by closing the browser. Please ensure that click 'done' at the end of the survey to submit your data.

RISKS AND BENEFITS
BCU Psychology students will be rewarded with 4 RPS participation credits for taking part. At the start of the survey, you will be asked to provide your RPS ID number. Please note that we cannot award credits if you do not supply your RPS ID.
